The history museum of the complex
Back to all places
The History Museum of the Rila Monastery presents the rich spiritual and cultural legacy of Bulgaria’s most revered monastic center. Among its most remarkable treasures is the Cross of Rafail — an extraordinary miniature woodcarving created by Monk Rafail at the end of the 18th century. Crafted from a single piece of wood, the cross contains over 100 miniature biblical scenes and more than 600 tiny figures, all carved with such precision that they can be fully appreciated only under magnification.
The museum also preserves a valuable collection of original Ottoman documents, including firmans and tax registers, which testify to the monastery’s privileges, struggles, and administrative relations during the Ottoman period. These documents offer a rare, firsthand glimpse into the social and political landscape of the time.
Together with its icons, manuscripts, liturgical objects, and gifts from Bulgarian rulers, the museum offers a vivid window into the centuries-long history of one of Bulgaria’s most important cultural and spiritual institutions.
You can also ask at the ticket office if they can show you some of the rooms in the Monastery. You can see the results of a competition between different towns, which have their representatives during the last restoration of the complex.
