The Historical Bakery
Back to all places
Just outside the monastery walls stands the historic bakery, a place that has served pilgrims for generations. Traditionally, it provided simple, freshly baked goods to travelers arriving after long journeys through the mountains.
Today, visitors can still enjoy its most beloved specialty: warm mekitsi (fried dough), prepared on the spot and served with powdered sugar, local honey, or homemade jam. You can also try freshly baked bread and other simple pastries that follow old monastic-style recipes.
The bakery remains a charming stop where you can literally taste a piece of the Rila Monastery’s living tradition.
